It was an eventful day on Thursday the 10th of November 2022. We had the pleasure of hosting a Women In Energy Network Session at the Energy Sustainability Conference hosted by Energy Institute Nigeria. Following the event was WIEN’s Inaugural Annual General Meeting; a hybrid event (online and physical) that conveyed live participants online from 16 other countries.
This year’s Energy Sustainability Conference; Driving a Sustainable Energy Future, lay emphasis on the need to reevaluate strategies in order to transform the future of energy in Nigeria, and all of Africa. The WIEN Session was a panel discussion themed; “Amplifying the Role of Corporates and SMEs in driving gender diversity in the Energy Industry”. Our moderator; Wola Joseph – Legal Chief and Company Secretary at Eko Electricity Distribution Plc, anchored the panel discussion, hosting four panelists from diverse sectors of the energy industry; Temilade Denton, Oghogho Makinde, Chinenye Ajayi, and Efuru Nwakuche. With all five ladies being members of WIEN, the discussion easily dwelled upon the significance of gender equality policies and strategic ways to encourage the inclusion of women into more activities and more competent positions in the workplace by corporates and SMEs. It was an hour filled with radiant ideas and perspectives on closing the huge gender gap that exists in the energy sector, and in the industry as a whole.
Towards evening, we transitioned into the WIEN Inaugural AGM which was organized with the primary objective of reviewing WIEN’s growth over the past two years, pointing out WIEN’s achievements over time, giving a report on the challenges identified in the energy industry, the solutions developed to address these challenges, the impact made through solutions we developed, and the threats that still linger of which we must abate. We discussed various solutions to the most critical issues affecting women professionals in the energy industry.
The event started with an opening address made by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees – Mrs. Cecila Aqua Umoren following this was a report presented by the President of Women In Energy Network; Mrs. Funmi Ogbue. Afterward, members at the high table; Mrs. Temilola Achakobe, Ms. Charlotte Essiet, Mrs. Eyono Fatayi Williams, Mrs. Ibiene Okeleke – all who are members of the BOD, WIEN. The WIEN Sustainability Program Report, sponsored by USAID Power Africa; is a descriptive representation of WIEN’s organizational sustainability plan and was presented by Miss. Charlotte ESSIET, Media and Publicity Director WIEN.
We then advanced to the next item on the agenda where our auditor for WIEN was reappointed, and a presentation of WIEN’s 2020 & 2021 audited reports was given. A Gender Research Report was also presented by the Secretary of the Board, Mrs. Ibiene Okeleke.
Ratification of the WIEN constitution was made as standard procedure, and part of the primary purpose of the AGM. The report of the recently concluded WIEN elections and the recent happenings was presented by the Head of Elections Mrs. Nnoli Akpedeye.
Lastly, as our meeting drew to a conclusion, a motion was passed for the meeting to be adjourned.
