The Environmental Pillar of ESG: A Leadership Imperative for Women in Energy

The energy industry is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in its history. For decades, success in oil and gas was measured primarily by reserves, production volumes, profitability, and operational efficiency. Today, a new set of metrics is shaping the future of the industry. Investors, regulators, governments, lenders, communities, and customers are increasingly asking a different question:
“How responsibly are you producing energy?”
This is where ESG comes in. ESG—Environmental, Social, and Governance—has become the global framework for evaluating corporate sustainability and long-term value creation. While all three pillars are important, the Environmental Pillar is often the most visible and scrutinized aspect of ESG, particularly for companies operating in the energy sector.
For women working across upstream, midstream, downstream, gas, power, renewables, consulting, finance, supply chain, and regulatory functions, understanding the Environmental Pillar is no longer optional. It is becoming a critical leadership competency. The future leaders of the energy industry will not only understand production, projects, and profitability. They will understand emissions, environmental stewardship, climate risks, sustainability reporting, and the energy transition.
This article explores the four key components of the Environmental Pillar: Emissions, Gas Flaring, Oil Spills and Environmental Protection, and Energy Transition, and what they mean for women in energy.
Understanding the Environmental Pillar of ESG
The Environmental Pillar examines how a company impacts the natural environment and how effectively it manages environmental risks and opportunities. It addresses questions such as:
- How much greenhouse gas does the company emit?
- How efficiently does it use energy?
- How does it manage waste and prevent pollution?
- How does it respond to spills and environmental incidents?
- How is it preparing for a low-carbon future?
The Environmental Pillar is fundamentally about stewardship. It recognizes that companies have a responsibility to generate economic value while protecting the environment for future generations. For energy companies, environmental performance is no longer just a compliance issue. It is increasingly becoming a business performance issue.
Emissions: Measuring What Matters
One of the most important environmental issues facing the energy industry today is greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere and contribute to climate change. The primary greenhouse gases associated with the energy sector include Carbon dioxide (CO₂), Methane (CH₄), and Nitrous oxide (N₂O).
Among these, methane deserves special attention. Methane is estimated to be more than 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period in terms of warming potential. This means that even relatively small methane leaks can have a significant environmental impact.
The Three Categories of Emissions
Scope 1 Emissions
Direct emissions generated from company operations. Examples include gas turbines, flaring operations, fuel combustion, and production facilities.
Scope 2 Emissions
Indirect emissions from purchased electricity. Examples include grid power used in offices and purchased electricity for facilities.
Scope 3 Emissions
Indirect emissions generated across the value chain. Examples include supplier activities, transportation, and customer use of products. Scope 3 emissions are often the largest and most challenging to measure.
Why Emissions Matter
Investors increasingly use emissions performance as a key indicator of ESG maturity. Companies with poor emissions performance may face higher financing costs, reduced investor confidence, regulatory scrutiny, and reputational risks. Conversely, companies that actively reduce emissions may benefit from better access to capital, stronger stakeholder trust, improved operational efficiency, and enhanced competitiveness. The old saying “what gets measured gets managed” applies perfectly to emissions management.
Gas Flaring: Turning Waste into Value
Gas flaring remains one of the most visible environmental challenges in the oil and gas industry. Flaring occurs when natural gas produced alongside crude oil is burned rather than captured and utilized. Historically, flaring was often viewed as a necessary operational practice. Today, it is increasingly viewed as a lost economic opportunity and an environmental concern.
Why Gas Flaring Matters
Gas flaring contributes to carbon emissions, air pollution, energy waste, community health concerns, and climate change. For Nigeria, the issue is particularly important because the country possesses one of Africa’s largest natural gas reserves. Every cubic foot of gas flared represents energy that could have been monetized and utilized.
Moving from Flaring to Monetization
Forward-looking companies are increasingly investing in gas gathering systems, gas processing plants, LNG projects, LPG production, CNG infrastructure, and power generation projects. The goal is simple: Turn waste into value. The future belongs to organizations that see associated gas not as a by-product but as a strategic asset.
Oil Spills and Environmental Protection
Few environmental incidents attract as much attention as oil spills. A single spill can have significant consequences for communities, ecosystems, company reputation, regulatory compliance, and investor confidence. Spills can impact water bodies, fisheries, agricultural land, biodiversity, and livelihoods.
Prevention Is Better Than Remediation
The best environmental strategy is preventing spills before they occur. Leading organizations focus on asset integrity management, corrosion control, pipeline monitoring, leak detection systems, inspection programs, and preventive maintenance. Every spill prevented protects both the environment and business value.
Building a Spill Response Culture
Despite best efforts, incidents can still occur. Companies therefore require emergency response plans, trained personnel, equipment readiness, community communication protocols, and incident investigation systems. A strong environmental culture treats spill prevention and response as everyone’s responsibility—not just the responsibility of the HSE department.
The Energy Transition: The Defining Opportunity of Our Generation
Perhaps no environmental topic receives more attention today than the energy transition. The energy transition refers to the global shift toward cleaner, lower-carbon energy systems, driven by climate change concerns, technological innovation, policy changes, investor expectations, and consumer preferences.
Many people mistakenly view the energy transition as a battle between fossil fuels and renewables. The reality is far more complex. The world still requires reliable, affordable, and secure energy. The challenge is how to provide that energy while reducing environmental impacts.
What the Energy Transition Means for Nigeria
Nigeria faces a unique challenge. The country must balance economic development, energy access, industrial growth, and climate commitments. This means the transition pathway for Nigeria will likely differ from that of developed economies. Natural gas is expected to play a significant role as a transition fuel while renewable energy investments continue to grow.
Emerging Opportunities
The energy transition is creating opportunities in natural gas development, carbon management, renewable energy, hydrogen technologies, energy efficiency, carbon markets, sustainability consulting, and ESG reporting. For women in energy, these emerging sectors represent tremendous opportunities for leadership, entrepreneurship, and career growth.
What Women in Energy Need to Do Today
The future ESG leaders are preparing now. Women across the energy value chain should focus on developing competencies in:
- Environmental Literacy: Understand climate change, carbon accounting, sustainability reporting, emissions management, and environmental regulations.
- ESG Reporting: Learn ESG frameworks, sustainability disclosures, materiality assessments, and environmental metrics.
- Data Analytics: Develop skills in data analysis, performance measurement, reporting systems, and digital tools.
- Strategic Thinking: Connect environmental performance with business strategy, risk management, investment decisions, and project execution.
- Continuous Learning: Commit to professional certifications, industry training, conferences, networking, and mentorship.

The Environmental Pillar is not simply an environmental issue. It is a leadership issue. It is a business issue. It is a competitiveness issue. It is a future-readiness issue.
